Travel Bans, consists of Caran D’Ache wax pastels applied to pages of maps I removed from an Atlas of the United States. I imagine the viewer as hovering high in the air, above these altered American land masses, looking down upon this floating dream/nightmare of U.S. cartography.
I decided to incorporate maps of individual States instead of international cartography because I feel that we Americans, via sundry individual States anti-democratic legislation, are having our civil rights and liberties become as obscured and obfuscated as the layered pastel strokes I use to block out and distort individual state boundaries. My imagery shifts between comfort and confusion within a terrain of broken boundaries.
