Overall: 74"x94" Each map drawing: 17""x22," 2017-2018Travel Bans, consists of Caran D’Ache wax pastels applied to pages of maps I removed from an Atlas of the United States. I imagine the viewer as hovering high in the air, above these altered American land masses, looking down upon this floating dream/nightmare of U.S. cartography.
I decided to incorporate maps of individual States instead of international cartography because I feel that we Americans, via sundry individual States anti-democratic legislation, are having our civil rights and liberties become as obscured and obfuscated as the layered pastel strokes I use to block out and distort individual state boundaries. My imagery shifts between comfort and confusion within a terrain of broken boundaries.

PROJECT STATEMENT
Travel Bans

Overall: 74"x94" Each map drawing: 17""x22," 2017-2018Travel Bans was inspired after attending a protest at JFK Airport against Trump's Muslim ban in 2017. I felt the decline of basic civil rights and liberties as I am suffocating from the lack of moral boundaries this administration spreads across our national landscape.
- At a February 29, 2020 campaign rally, Trump proclaimed the Coronavirus a hoax. Even more malevolent than the Muslim travel bans was on March 11th, 2020 when he announced the banning of all air travel from Europe to the United States but exempted Great Britain and Ireland, which coincidentally are the only European countries where he owns golf resorts.
